Ownership Essay

"To what extent does Media Ownership impact the success of a film."

Media Ownership has shown to be a great way for success to film companies. This is because large industries like Hollywood and particularly, Disney own a great number of acquisitions making it very easy to make their films known and noticed by audiences within and outside of their target markets.  Both are Parent companies, Monopolies of the Movie Industry making it very difficult for any other film companies to compete with them.

Disney in particular is a conglomerate, which means it owns lots of different smaller companies/acquisitions. This has been a great advantage for Disney as they've been able to expand their fan bases through a wide range of different target audiences that they can create content for but also entertain their fans through their theme parks and Disney + app. Disney creates content with ease as they have so many characters and storylines under their rights so it isn't difficult for them to put together films. Independent films take so much effort into thinking and creating storylines, whereas Disney already has fans attached to characters and storylines so they can create successful movies like a prequel or sequel without having to take much thought into making the storyline creative as they know fans will love it either way. Disney has so much advantages advertising wise when it comes to releasing a film as they only need something as simple as Fox news (one of their acquisitions) to mention it whilst telling the weather or something like that. And this wouldn't even cost a cent to Disney. Disney gives a clear identification that owning and monopolising the film empire has allowed for so much success and fortune to the Disney company.

The New Zealand film company however doesn't have a large ownership of many companies, though has been able to create quite a few successful films. What we do in the Shadows, directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, was released in February 2015 and has made up to 7.3 million USD. Of course this is not much compared to the Big 5, however it was impressive for only being a not well known film company. It just proves that how difficult it is for the smaller independent companies to even compete with the larger companies. Their goals when creating films are purely to get noticed whereas the big companies only care about money. The NZFC has made about 140 films and Disney has made over 900. This just proves the point of ease it is for Disney to make films, and i'm sure almost all or most of them have been very successful as it is Disney we're talking about!!

As listed above being having a lot of acquisitions provides so much such success to any films in so many ways, plus it allows them to cast A-list actors as they have the money and means to do so. Film companies want A-list characters as they attract large amounts of fans of those actors to watch the film. A-list actors want to partner with the big film companies as they know it wont be risky and will make them a lot of money. Both sides gain so much. Smaller film companies just don't have the money to spend on big actors and can't have the advantages of the A-list actors.

In conclusion, it's safe to say that Media Ownership does create majority of the success for films. Majority of the successful films are made from Conglomerates as they just have so many advantages. Their may be the one of Independent film making good money, but as far as I know it takes so much for them to even be noticed and the larger companies are becoming successful with ease.
