Preliminary Task 1-Planning

Mind Map

Concept

The chase is the title of our film. This title fits well with our film as it reinforces the fast quick pace shots used as well as the tone the film tries to create. Our film is filled with suspense and lots of unknown facts so the title plays along with having to almost "chase" your thoughts together whilst watching.

Our target audience are a maturer audience who are interested in a good thriller.

Plot synopsis (Tiana)

The shots taken will vary from many different close ups to extreme close ups, as we are trying to keep it very suspenseful, therefore not giving too much information by what is seen. For example, a shot will show only a gun, leaving the audience unsure what is to happen or what it might represent. A chase seen will be included where we will experience with the 180° rule, learning how to keep our shots heading in the same direction. We will also incorporate the use of the match-on-action technique, through our main character opening a door, this again will help us to learn how to keep continuity in our shots. In terms of lighting, for most of the film natural lighting will be used apart from the bathroom scene, where lights will be backlighting the character to get an effect of suspense with their shadow. The use of a flashback will be involved in our film. In this editing will be short quick cuts, keeping it fast pace, and a ‘chase’ to viewers. All linking back to the suspense we are trying to create with truly little backstory/information revealed to the audience leaving them uneasy and worried about what is to come.

Below are some examples of the type of shots/lighting techniques we will use:

Treatment

Two characters are in our film, one an innocent girl who has been malnourished and is weak for the time she has been held hostage, whilst the other character, who is still played by a girl, however her costume and manner is a lot more intimidating and scarier as she is the one holding the girl hostage. Throughout the film a tone of suspense is created and being the main mood set for the film. It is represented through close-ups, quick edits, suspenseful music, uneasy/unsafe locations, and the darkness/coldness of the bathroom scene. Camera techniques we are using include close-ups high angle shots, 180° rule, and match-on-action. All shots help create an airy uneasy feeling for the audience, which is very enticing for our target audience. Themes included in our film are innocence, weakness vs power, and hurt. Meaning behind the settings chosen includes a bathroom, which is dark, cold, and empty almost representing how the girl is left feeling after being held hostage, and the shed area as it looks abandoned with no life in it, again representing how the girl is being kidnapped yet is like forgotten by the rest of the world. Symbolism is used through a mirror as it is used to represent looking at her past, as the young girl flashes back to her kidnapping in the past. Our editing styles we will use will be quick cuts during the flashback, however long and slow cuts in the bathroom scene. Aiming to create a clear contrast between the two, and creating anxiety for the audience, waiting for something bad to happen.

  • Storyboard-Tiana

    • Location recce-Tiana
For the first location were using an abandoned shed as its representing the idea of the girl being abandoned/homeless. The shed area is very run-down again reinforcing the abandoned effect. The area also looks 'sketchy' so its an ideal place for a kidnapping as people are unlikely to go near it, therefore leaving the girl unfound.
The second location is a bathroom which is empty, giving off this idea of emptiness to the girl. Emptiness can easily be created in this specific location as its dark and plain with nothing but the necessities, its not special. As she looks at her self in the reflection of the mirror, she too can feel like and almost act as if she is the emptiness of the bathroom.

    • Lighting
In terms of lighting, for most of the film natural lighting will be used apart from the bathroom scene, where lights will be backlighting the character to get an effect of suspense with their shadow. The shadow help creates a sense of mystery and unknown as it hides the characters full features, allowing for suspicion to rise for audience. Natural lighting however contrasts with the darkness in the bathroom, as the action taking place in these scenes are a lot more fast pace and quick.
