Representative Essay

What sectors of society are RE-presented to us? How is meaning created using the 4 technical elements and what messages are we being fed?

Notes:

The scene is set with the doctors in their uniform and an obvious 'hospital' setting. A male doctor is standing outside of the emergency doors tracking who is going in through the doors. After one women goes through the doors a male doctor is prohibited from entering, and after another women doctor is let through after this. Here the audience is given some information about the situation and the factor that "no male doctors are allowed in" is introduced through this and also the subtle background intercom saying, "Paediatrics" can kind of indicate that they are calling for doctors to come to the situation.

After this the film switches to a shot of the hallway where the resolution to the situation before is seen through an only women filled hallway. A tracking shot follows the doctor as we "track" her reaction to the situation, as she's almost just as confused to what is happening to what the audience is thinking. The doctor asks why they were called to the hall and another character replies "Just that a patient needs us." Again allowing more information to what is happening for the audience. The tracking shot also gets into the action as it allows for a point of view to what the characters are experienced to be shown to the audience. So in this situation the tracking shot get's us in the action of all quickly getting to the hall to be ready "to help" the need of the patient.

Before the main event of the entering of the patient, the non-diegetic background is switched through a whooshing sound effect to a subtle gentle background music. Another tracking shot follows the crowd of nurses as they line-up allowing the walls of the halls. A voice of either the intercom is played, dominating the sound, like the voice is instructing them to line up. Noises of the hospital play, just to reinforce the establishment of the setting as a hospital. The camera continues tracking the movement of the doctors lining up giving an intense effect to the switch of the extreme close-up of the nurse, as the audiences point of view is switched to being the patient.

All background noise is cut with no music at all but the breath of the patient as we are shown the image of the patient through a close-up of her on the hospital bed. As the camera switches to her point of view again, music begins playing and no diegetic sound is heard as the music acts like how the patient would have reacted to the sight of only women, as it was like a sigh of relief. Having only music also makes the audience focus on the emotions of the characters as no noise can indicate how they are feeling.

As she now recognise the "safe" environment in front of her with no men, The music dims as she nods and says, "yes" to the nurse. As the patient is wheeled her way through the line up of women doctors the camera tracks the movement whilst switching between cuts of the patient and the line of doctors. Extreme close-ups are shown of some of the doctors again representing the patients point of view as some of them nod at her, to reassure she is safe.

A high angle shot is used as the women enters the elevator. Close-ups show her taking deep breaths as she seems a lot more calmer and ready for the surgery that is about to happen. As she enters the next level from the elevator women still line up as well as only women being in the theatre room for her surgery. Mise-en-scene can be recognised of the presence only being women when the patient is around. The audience can recognise that the presence of 'men' probably make the patient uncomfortable, and this is why she was able to be calmed before having to enter her surgery.
