"Explain how the meaning is created using the four technical areas, in the following clip."
In the stay out of my territory clips the two big picture ideas age and gender are represented to us. Through age the older guy is shown to be an observant, roughly normal looking man, who has obviously had a past with the gang or drug life. The younger guy looks like Hes living the drug life, however is nervous and incompetent when confronted by the older man. Males are the dominant gender in this clip as they’re seen as aggressive and territorial whereas the women are not in the storyline, just there to set the scene.
Small monuments like the paint brand being called “Killz” can be recognized as mise-En-scene as they relate to the action that is to follow. As we were able to recognize that drugs were a factor in the two characters life, we can only relate the name “Killz” to the fact that something bad is to happen or that the man Hes about to meet is bad news.
Tracking shots are used to attract viewers' eyes to the action, and take them along with them. This type of shot was used a lot in the beginning as we were introduced to the two main characters. The tracking shot and close ups also allowed us as viewers to get close glimpses of the appearances of the characters as we could start to recognize the type of people they were.
Meaning is created a lot through the appearances of the two characters. The older man has a bald head so we therefore could stereotype him for being a part of a gang past life. We can identify it's his past life as he mainly looks like any other older man, pants and a sweatshirt, average clothing. With his curiosity to the trolly we can tell Hes very observant and with his past and straight up understanding to what the younger guy was up to with the stuff in the trolly we can tell Hes also very knowledgeable. On the other hand, the younger guy straight away from encountering with the older guy was scared and nervous with his actions, I guess as a response to the guilt he may have to be dealing with substances against the law. Also, as revealed later the younger guy is like under the commands of someone else, it almost makes him seem so incompetent and out of depth. The younger guy is worried about how the older guy responds to the trolly as he knows Hes on the wrong side of law as well as being younger than the older guy. It can make him seem inferior or less in control than him.
Gender is represented through the male dominance throughout the scenes. The women aren’t apart of the storyline, merely just there to fill in characters. As both characters are represented as once or are involved with illegal substances, we can stereotype men to be seen as generally involved in illegal activity. We can say that in this men have certain Dominice and are territorial through the line “stay out of my territory”. As the older guy walks out of the supermarket to approach the other men, a high angle shot is used making the older guy seem bigger and powerful than the younger men. The older guys powerfulness is strong enough that it scares off the men, however either way the men seemed that they were ready to fight if things went other ways. This clip really stereotypes men to be aggressive dominant and confrontational, it doesn't really give them a positive outlook and just shows their immaturity when compared to women.
The sound inside the supermarket has little to no soundtrack music playing, as it is set to sound how a normal shopping place would sound with background talking, checkout sounds as well as intercom talking. This contrasts nicely to when it switches to the scene outside of the supermarket as now an intense soundtrack comes on to create a more drastic empowerment to what is happening out there, and also matches the aggressive tones the men are speaking in towards each other.
