Synergy and Cross Media Convergence
"To what extent has cross-media-convergence and synergy played a part in the success of the media texts you have studied"
Cross Media Convergence and synergy are both definitely huge factors in the success of films. Especially with the Big 5 conglomerate, Disney, Sony, Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers; who each own quite a few subsidiaries, making this very easy for them to market their films through the two strategies. All thriving in the film empire, with the sole purpose to make money.
Specifically Disney, dominates 28% of this empire through the many popular acquisitions it holds. Fox Family, Pixar, and Marvel, just to name a few. Each of these acquisitions aren't small as well. They are all very well known and popular with audiences. Therefore allowing them to advertise their media through cross-media-convergence throughout their their acquisitions with no cost and be able to reach multiple different audiences . For example, Fox news can talk about a new Disney movie on the show. However, not only can Disney easily market through media mediums, but also through their huge theme parks which are visited by over 58 million people annually. However, it's their own owning so they make all the profits. Both Media-Convergence and synergy has allowed for major success for Disney as now they are basically a Monopoly of the media/film industry and are making it almost impossible for indapendant film companies to be known or even noticed.
Films strategies for marketing their films differentiate from per say one of the Big 5 and an independant film Company. The Dark Knight, a Warner Bros. film, had a worldwide campaign, to where a fan base was created before the movie was released. The fans basically went on a quest where they were like in Gotham city finding clue to a trailer of the movie. 10 million participants joined in over 75 countries. The virtual game made all pre-sale tickets opening night, morning, midnight, 3am and 6am sold out. Biggest opening day of all time as well as the top grossing film of the year. However, What We Do In the Shadows, an independant film, had to use a more simple/ cheaper approach which happened to actually be quite successful. Thins they would do would be showing up at fan events, Running art competitions to create their posters, and running interesting Facebook accounts.
In a smaller film industry like The New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) Making money isn't the goal of the films. So the government agency invests into the films with a purpose to promote New Zealand films oversees, whilst promoting New Zealand culture and trying to attract tourists to the country. Hunt for the Wilder people is an example of a film they funded, and it has grossed over $23 million, receiving a 97% rotten tomatoes rating. Every year the NZFC goals to fund up to 8-12 movies every year. Their budgets is made of government funding, lottery grants, board funding, income from films, interests and reserves. Their total budget is around 26 million.
The Black Panther is a great example of Synergy as after the movie was made multiple, toys games and books were made from it. Black Panther comics, Black Panther books, Black Panther video games, Black Panther in the movie Captain America and Black Panther in animated T.V series. Also Black Panther and leg col-abed, kendrick lamar made a song for the movie and a lexus car ad used Black Panther in it.
With all these examples it is clear that cross media convergence and synergy does lead to majority of the success for movies, however some of the larger companies most likely doesn't need to use it as extremely as they have established fan bases and people would still want to watch the movies due to knowing that it would most likely be a good movie.
